Slow Formatting Burning And Installing12/12/2009 5:33:01 PM

I have a no-name machine, Intel Core2Duo with 2GB of memory running Windows
XPSP3. Motherboard is Gigabyte GA965P version 1... I believe it is version 1
as the version number is blocked but when speaking to the company, they said
based upon the location of the writing that is the version it is.

The problems are communications internally ..... Burning a cd can take
almost an hour ..... installing a program from cd or dvd takes forever ....
and formatting a 250gb sata internal drive is 10% done after over 3 hours.

The main hard drive is a Seagate 160gb sata ... the 250gb is drive "d" and
while I have had it sitting in the machine connected, it was previously not
formatted..... probably because I ran into this once before and cancelled the
format.

Any thoughts on what settings I might look to change ?

Thanks,
Sarah

I had a problem similar to this a ways back. It turned out that the
CD/DVD drivers that came with the motherboard were generic. I went to
the drive manufacturer's site and downloaded drivers for the CD/DVD
drive that worked just fine.

A 250Gb drive, SATA or not, will take a while to format (NTFS or
otherwise). I'm not sure just how long it should take as I've not done
it, but 3 hours sounds a little on the long side.

Thank you. I will look into the drivers and definitely update.

I just wonder if it is more though as every aspect of communication takes
longer .... even copying of files.

Every copy of XP I've used did file copies pretty fast. There may be
another underlying problem with your OS install. Copying to/from a USB
thumb drive was a bit slow come to think of it.

Check the drivers first however.
