My boyfriend just bought a new pc running Vista and needs to get files off of
the old HD with XP Pro. He's installed the old HD (drive J) into the new pc -
when he attempts to explore drive J he gets the access is denied message. I
told him about taking ownership and disabling simple file sharing, but he's
having a problem because the Vista interface is completely different...is the
procedure a different one if the hard drives have different OS's?

Try run,type: diskmgmt.msc In msc,L.click on the xp hd,go to actions,
all,locate and select "make active",if its available to do so.

First ignore this Andrew E. He is the resident idiot here.

Secondly you did right by telling your boyfriend what to do. The Vista will have no
problems reading a slaved HD even if it in XP. How exactly are you trying to take
ownership and are you doing the disabling of the simple file sharing with Vista

Buy a USB HDD External Box (=A315-=A320). Just plug in any hard drive. C/W
IDE & SATA connections.

After reading your reply, we followed the steps as outlined in the Microsoft
support article "How to take ownership of a file or folder in Windows XP";
however, he still got the "access is denied" message. So, he went back into
the sharing utility and noticed that the current owner listed says "unable to
display current owner".
What does that mean? BTW, he does have admin privileges as his is the only
account on the machine. Still, there were two entries under the "change to"
box. The other is a profile, that he did not set up.

I figured it out...boot into safe mode and gain access to the drive. Thanks
