The first thing to do is to look at the File Replication Service Event Logs
to see if you get a 13516 Event following the startup of the machine, and
confirm if the Sysvol and Netlogon shares are present.
When you did your restore, was this following a crash or can you explain
what was the reason for the restore?
After complete the System State restore, did you run the NTDSutil command to
set the restore as an Authoritative Restore from within the DSRM boot mode
after the data restore but prior to rebooting?
I would suggest you try running the wizard first by choosing each option
listed to "not change" the current configuration to see if that succeeds.
Either way, then rerun the wizard again changing only the Firewall setting,
but nothing else (no Exchange settings). See if that succeeds.
It's essential to determine that your server restore was complete in order
to further diagnose the networking configuration issues.

Hello Jeff, thanks for responding and the information provided. I ran the
restor through the CMD prompt entering ntbackup and then restoring the files
from mt latest backup. But I did not run NTDSutil at any time. I ran the
restore after atempting to reconfigure my fax service, removing it and ading
it back in through windows components, after thei mer email service stoped
and access to the company intranet pages stopped.
I have tried the ICW without making any changes but it has the same fail
messages.
I do get the event 13516 which states the system volume has been
successfully initialised and the net logon service has been notified that the
system volume is now ready to be shared as SYSVOL.
Any further and simple advice would be appreciated on the NTDSutil, and DSRM
process would be usefull if you think I need to do this.
Thanks

| Freddie,
Here are a couple of KBs that can guide you on the restore process of a DC,
plus one for making that an Authoritative Restore. Note that these KBs say
they are for Windows 2000, they apply also to Windows 2003.
How To Use the Backup Program to Back Up and Restore the System State in
Windows 2000
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/240363/en-us
How to perform an authoritative restore to a domain controller in Windows
2000
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/241594/en-us
The key point is to perform both steps in the restore by booting into DSRM
Mode, do the System State restore, then perform the Authoritative Restore
commands before you reboot.
As for your original problem, to be honest with you this doesn't sound very
good as a symptom path into the issue you have. There's really no particular
reason why reinstalling the Fax service would affect the range of networking
services. It sounds like the change in the Fax device drivers caused a
problem with network configuration, but having that occur is a pretty odd
combination of failure.
Assuming that you are working from a single-NIC configuration on this
machine (so that you are not using your SBS Server as a firewall), I would
recommend you uninstall RRAS if it is currently installed, restart the
machine and try to rerun the ICW.
Assuming that you are working with a dual-NIC machine, I would recommend
that you temporarily unplug your 2nd NIC and disable it, uninstall RRAS and
reboot. From there try rerunning the ICW.
If none of that gets you any headway, we are faced with trying to decide
which symptoms you have that are related to the original issue and what is
related to the System State restore you did and if that restore is possibly
what is causing additional complications.
I'm hoping that you are certain that the System State restore you performed
is from a period when the SBS Server was running the exact same combination
of service packs that have most recently been running.
At some point you may find that you either need to consider rerunning SBS
Setup to refresh the configuration or you need to get someone to logon to
your server to get more specific information on what exactly is the nature
of this failure. Unfortunately the only idea I'm getting in my mind about
how remove and reinstall of Fax could possibly cause you to lose your
networking configuration, CEICW function, websites not accessible and
Exchange not running would relate back to a corruption of the IIS metabase
and that's a nasty problem. Typically a System State restore would be the
resolution, but if you are not having any luck with having done that, we
have a potentially complicated issue here.
Just as a shot in the dark, I'd like to suggest that you execute a Chkdsk C:
/f, accept the suggestion to have that performed on a the next reboot and
then do the reboot to ensure that we are not fighting something dumb here
like disk errors. I could also make sense of setting the Paging File size =
0 in order to ensure you don't have corruption in the page file. You could
then reset it back to automatic following a reboot to clear it out.

| uHi Jeff,
Thanks for your help, I tried the authorative restore, and all suggestions,
including the chkdsk as advised, but to no avail. I have now refreshed the
SBS setup but now get event application errors source MSExchangeSA, event ID
9175 the description is "The MAPI call 'openMsgStore' failed with the
following error:Either there are network problems or the microsoft exchange
server is down for maintenence.
Is there anything I can check to resolve this. Access to the server for
files/documnet sis ok but outlook asks for a logon when you start the
application up on client pc's after entering the password outlook fails to
connect.
Many thanks

| Freddie,
Event 9175 generally isn't a useful error message, you need to look for
additional errors. That message occurs on almost any faulted configuration.
You need to see if the stores are mounted and running, and whatever other
service related errors you have.
